Taking a page out of UE’s playbook in the Bluetooth speaker market, Saber mini aims to disrupt the portable power bank market with bold design plus life-proof construction.
Designing From The Inside Out.
Before worrying about the looks, we established an architecture that’s most space efficient and easy to manufacture. This became the foundation for all the later design iterations.
FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE
It wans’t just about making a great product, it’s about making the best relevant product at the price-point which people would pay for, while making a profit.
Weighting the pros and cons of each design iteration in terms of functionality, user experience, cost, R&D timeline, and ease of manufacturing was a huge learning experience for me as a junior designer. There were countless heated discussions about the placement and functions of the button, the structure of the weather door, all the way down to the texture on the button membrane, and the depth of the light pipes.
DFM.
We worked closely with the engineering team to make sure mini is ultra cost efficient with a short and easy assembly process - even designed custom fixtures to further optimize the flow.

Mini’s tubular form factor feels great in the hand and occupies less space. Compared to the 1st generation Saber power bank, mini is only 35% of the volume with 75% of the capacity thanks to its improved architecture.
